Bass Museum of Art

The Bass Museum is one of the main reasons Miami is considered a cultural destination. The museum specializes in Renaissance to modern art from around the world. It’s well known for creating and presenting traveling exhibitions from national and international collectors, highlighting contemporary art, 19th century paintings and Asian art.

SoBe Institute of the Arts

A popular venue for performing arts, SoBe captivates audiences with a variety of live music, theater, dance and film. It’s sort of tucked away, but once you find it you’ll be thrilled with the quality of the performances as well as the reasonable ticket prices. The community rallies behind this little gem and they are richly rewarded with free performances throughout the year.

Miami Beach Botanical Garden

Though relatively small, clocking in at 2.6 acres, this botanic wonderland recently underwent a $1.2 million landscape renovation and is now known as a stunning spot to stop. The garden showcases native Floridian plants and trees, a Japanese garden and water gardens as well as a large pond and a Great Lawn for social events. Best of all? Admission is free.

Historic Virginia Key Beach Park

Virginia Key is a barrier island off the coast of Miami, accessible via the Rickenbacker Causeway. The park is situated on the island, sharing it with several aquatic-themed parks and schools. It’s known for having the largest mangrove wetland in the state and it shows off many historical landmarks, including the bathhouse, carousel house and train tunnel.

Miami Beach Convention Center

This enormous convention center (its four rooms each hold 12,000 people) has hosted events as diverse as the Miss Universe pageant, a Billy Graham crusade and both Republican and Democratic National Conventions. Today, the spacious spots are used for the South Florida Auto Show, Art Basel, Forgiato Fest and other local popular events. While you’re there, don’t forget to check out the Jackie Gleason Theater and its lineup of talent.

New World Symphony

Calling this a “music school” doesn’t begin to do it justice. The New World Symphony is the only American full-time orchestral academy preparing musicians for careers in symphony orchestras and ensembles. If you want to hear their talent live, the New World Symphony presents a season of concerts from September to May.

Jackie Gleason Theater

The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater has been compared to a cat with several lives. Once home of The Jackie Gleason Show, the theater was supposed to be demolished and replaced with a hotel when the adjoining convention center was remodeled. It’s still standing, though, and today hosts live concerts, productions and other special events.

Miami City Ballet

This ballet company is widely known as one of the most respected of its kind in the U.S. Relying mainly on the works of George Balanchine, it nonetheless visits the work of many other notable choreographers and performs many traditional classics to the delight of audiences. Do you have a budding ballerina? The company operates the Miami City Ballet School, which accepts 375 students each year.

Bal Harbour Shops

You want luxury? Look no farther than this upscale, open-air shopping mall that has operated at 100% occupancy (with a waiting list) for decades. And the tenants couldn’t be any more illustrious: Chanel and Tory Burch rub shoulders with Prada and Dolce & Gabbana. No need to ignore the sirens’ call this time: Bal Harbour is ranked as the number one mall in the world so you can call it sightseeing if you wander over.
